Clearing the Way for Disciple-Making Leadership

Discover how policy-based governance can free your church to lead with clarity, unity, and purpose—so your structure fuels your mission, not frustrates it.

Every church wants to make an impact—but often, outdated structures and unclear governance stand in the way. Leaders feel stuck, bogged down by meetings and decisions that drain energy from the mission. The truth is, it’s not a lack of passion or faith that slows churches down—it’s a system that no longer fits the size or season of the ministry. The Governance for Mission Mini-Course is designed to help you break free from that frustration. In this free training, Matt Peeples, John Brunette, and Jim Galvin walk you through the practical steps to align your church’s governance with its mission. You’ll learn how policy-based leadership creates freedom for pastors to lead, boards to govern with clarity, and congregations to move forward together with unity and purpose. This is more than a course—it’s the beginning of a shift. A shift toward clarity, accountability, and Spirit-led leadership that clears the way for disciple-making and mission impact. If you’re ready to lead a healthier church that’s structured for the mission of Jesus, this free course will help you take your first step with confidence.

I was one of seven children (6 boys and 1 girl) born to Rev. Duane and Barbara Brunette while my father was serving three small churches in Calhoun County. During my childhood we lived in Bethalto, IL, Hales Corners, WI (suburb of Milwaukee), and Little Rock, AR. I met my wife, Julie Kaphingst, during high school in Milwaukee. We dated for over 7 years before I married my best friend and entered into Concordia Seminary here in St. Louis. Julie and I both received elementary teaching degrees from Concordia University in River Forest, IL (a suburb of Chicago). We have been blessed with four daughters, two son-in-laws, and one granddaughter - Rachel (Chris), Hannah (Ben), Joy, Michala, and Jayla (our granddaughter). People sometime ask, "When did you become a follower of Christ?" I was baptized as an infant and don't ever recall a time Jesus wasn't gently tugging, leading, and guiding my life. Becoming a pastor wasn't one of my early dreams (maybe a professional athlete or a rock musician!) My life is a constant reflection of God's grace. I was an insecure, competitive, young man who sometimes struggled with stuttering. I constantly find comfort and encouragement in Paul's words when he wrote, My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power. (1 Corinthians 2:4-5 NIV) I enjoy watching the Cardinals, an occasional round of golf or playing tennis, taking Julie on dates, and experiencing our little princess (Jayla) grow up among a family of princesses. And, you still might see me playing some power chords on my electric guitar or picking (and grinnin') on the six string banjo or acoustic guitar in worship. Mostly, I enjoy seeing people carry out their passion and vision as it is connected to the extraordinary life found in Christ and the mission He has given each of His children and His Church.

Passionate about connecting the disconnected and helping people translate the unchanging gospel to an ever-changing world. Lives this passion out through preaching, teaching, and training the next generation of disciple makers, church planters, and ministry leaders. He is the Founder and Director of the Kairos Network. The Kairos Network launched in June of 2017, to develop and train church planters, pastors, and lay leaders to reach the disconnected for Christ. While the Gospel is unchanging, the way we teach people about Jesus changes. To engage the world around us we must move into new places in new ways. It has been a vehicle for planting churches, launching church plant training pathway, a webinar training series, and helping the church at large learn live-streaming and other useful tools to navigate the pandemic.
